Yamaha, E-Z-Go and Club Car are no longer the only games in town. Several viable alternatives are now available, and one of the top choices is the A2D from E-Car. E-Car, however, is not a new company. It has been operating in Southeast Asia as a joint effort with German engineers and parts manufacturers in the United States and Europe. The A2D has only recently begun to be offered in other parts of the world, and it is making a big impression on golfers and those looking for neighborhood electric vehicles (NEVs).
E-Car is recognized throughout Southeast Asia, and as distribution grows to include other countries around the world, the brand’s popularity continues to rise. In 2005, a South Pacific distribution network was established in Queensland, Australia, where the name has come to be associated with quality, value and advanced technology. In addition to Australia, E-Car vehicles are distributed and marketed in more than 30 countries across North America, Europe and the Middle East.
The A2D is the basic golf cart from E-Car, and it is manufactured in Asia by Lvtong, one of the top suppliers on the continent. Commercial and retail dealers have a direct relationship with Lvtong, which allows them to purchase the vehicles from the factory, and this benefit is passed on to buyers in the form of low prices and factory customization.
E-Car golf carts and NEVs are manufactured in China in one of only two state-of-the-art golf-cart plants in the country. The A2D is a unique product that combines German engineering with Chinese efficiency, and in an effort to maximize quality, many of the electrical and mechanical components are from Europe and the U.S.
E-Car is one of the most popular brands of golf carts in terms of volume. More than 30,000 units are produced each year, and the company is currently in the middle of a large expansion program that is set to double this capacity within the next two to three years.
The E-Car A2D is a two-seat, electric vehicle with a cargo rack in the back. Its dimensions are 96.5 inches long by 45.7 inches wide by 72.4 inches high, and the car has a ground clearance of 4.5 inches. The tread width is 34.25 inches in the front and 38.6 inches in the rear, and its net weight without batteries is 573 pounds.
The A2D can accelerate to a maximum velocity of 14.9 mph, and it can be driven for more than 62 miles on a single charge. When traveling at this speed, the stopping distance is 8.2 feet, and it can climb hills with a grade of up to 30 percent with a full load, which is 793 pounds.
All of the standard features make the A2D a pleasure to drive even without any of the options and accessories. The motor is made in the U.S. and is a premium-quality, 48-volt, ADC electric model with 3.7 kilowatts of power. It is shunt wound, separately excitable and runs on Trojan deep-cycle, heavy-duty, lead-acid batteries that fully charge in 10 hours with the onboard 6-amp DC charger. To round it out, the advanced controller is a U.S. Curtis PMC 1266 with a SepEx processor. It is fully programmable and uses MOFSET power.
The body panels are injection-molded ABS 747 polypropylene that have been infused with a glossy, automotive-grade, color finish that is resistant to UV radiation, and they are attached to a seamless ladder-style chassis made of high-tensile, tubular steel. The chassis has also undergone a full-immersion, anti-corrosive phosphate treatment with an epoxy base coat and a laser-painted, electrostatically applied top coat for enhanced durability. The manufacturer is so sure of this chassis that it comes with a 10-year warranty.
Steering is accomplished with a self-adjusting, permanently lubricated, rack-and-pinion column with sealed tie-rods, and the fully independent suspension gets you smoothly through even the roughest courses and most unpaved roads. The suspension includes helical rings over hydraulic struts and aluminum front hubs with permanently sealed and lubricated bearings.
The transaxle of the A2D is an Italian-made Graziano that is directly coupled to the motor and has high-ratio helical gears fixed at 12.315:1 in drive. It runs very quietly, is low maintenance and has a long lifespan.
Each A2D model comes equipped with a full light kit, turn signals and a horn. It also has chrome dress rims, two side mirrors and a split-folding windscreen. For cargo and gear, the cart includes two side-cooler baskets, a front basket and a rear sweater basket.
In addition, the A2D can be customized with one or more of the following options:
The E-Car A2D is a high-performance electric vehicle that is great for golf courses or neighborhood driving in all weather conditions. The motor is highly resistant to temperature extremes, and the chassis is made to resist corrosion. The ride is smooth, quiet and pleasurable, and the vehicle is affordable and energy efficient.
